On September 11, 2023, the jury for the FotoDoc Photo Contest 2023 gathered in person at the Panamericana School of Art and Design in São Paulo. The panel included Érico Elias, Artistic Director of the FotoDoc Festival; Elcio Ohnuma, Photography Coordinator at the Panamericana School; as well as curator Mônica Maia and photographers Nair Benedicto and Tuca Vieira, both guest artists at the 2023 edition of the festival. The jury reviewed 51 finalist portfolios and selected 17 winners.
André Valentim was awarded the grand prize for his portfolio No Olho da Rua (In the Eye of the Street), which documents life in Fazenda Modelo, a shelter for the homeless that was shut down in 2003 in Rio de Janeiro. The black-and-white images were captured on film between 2001 and 2003. As the grand prize winner, Valentim will receive a custom-designed trophy created exclusively for the contest.
