The Nest

Between Madrid and Vigo, Spanish photographer Francisco Fresneda builds a body of work that transforms the camera into an instrument of intimate exploration and personal therapy. At 37 years old, he balances his life as an artistic photographer with his passion for design, refusing commercial work that doesn’t inspire him to focus on personal projects and exhibitions. His photography – which moves between analog and digital formats – revolves around themes such as identity, presence, memory, and the act of observing, always approached with honesty, intimacy, and emotional depth in his search for the self.

His essay “The Nest” a finalist in the Photo Essay category of the FotoDoc Photo Contest 2025, is a work of rare sensitivity about a contemporary taboo: perinatal grief. Developed between 2024 and 2025 during the period when he was awaiting the birth of his own baby, the project was born from the perception that miscarriage remains a taboo subject, even among younger generations. By sharing the experience with other parents, Fresneda felt compelled to portray the silent pain that many mothers face, creating a visual testimony about unrecognized grief and interrupted expectation. The work connects organically with his previous photographic practice, deepening his exploration of identity and memory through a courageous and emotionally honest approach.

Learn more about this journey of grief and healing, and the projects that map physical and existential boundaries in the following interview.

How old are you? Where do you currently live and work?

I am 37 years old and currently divide my time between Madrid and Vigo, Spain, from where I pursue my photographic work, combining personal projects with occasional editorial collaborations and exhibitions.

Tell us about your journey in photography. When did you start photographing and why? What role does photography play in your life?

I currently balance my life as an artistic photographer with my passion for design. I no longer take on commercial work that doesn’t inspire me, and my focus is on working freely and staging exhibitions. Photography has always been more than an artistic discipline for me — it is a form of personal therapy and exploration. Much of my work revolves around identity, presence, memory, and the act of observing. I often work with both digital and analog formats and my recurring theme is the search for the self, approached with honesty, intimacy, and emotional depth.

Tell us about your finalist work for the FotoDoc Photo Contest 2025. When and where was it created? What is its concept? How does it fit into your photographic practice?

The project is taking place between 2024 and 2025, during the time when we were hoping for the birth of our baby. While sharing the experience with other parents, I realised that miscarriage remains a taboo subject, even among the younger generations, and I quickly felt compelled to portray the grief that many mothers endure.

What projects are you currently working on? What are your near-future plans for photographic production?

I am currently working on two projects, one related to the elderly and another focusing on the border between Spain and Portugal, primarily in the Galicia region.
