Documentary Photography Festival

FotoDoc – International Photography Festival is an event aimed at promoting documentary photographic production, marked by long-term authorial projects on hot topics on the contemporary scene, using a variety of technical and formal resources.

Documentary photography cuts across all genres: street scene, landscape, portrait, nature, wildlife and photojournalism. Its hallmark is its commitment to expressing the real in its social and critical implications, using montage techniques to build compelling and contagious visual narratives through the use of photographs and texts in a variety of media.

FotoDoc celebrated its birth in 2022, the result of a partnership between Vertente Fotografiaa production company owned by Érico Eliaswith the Panamericana School of Art and Design.

With a degree in Journalism and Photography, as well as a Master’s and PhD in Visual Arts, Érico Elias served as Communications Coordinator, Curator and Artistic Director of the Paraty in Focus festival for five editions, from 2015 to 2019. This experience led him to create his own production company, Vertente, in 2019.

In 2020, Érico Elias created the new Fotografe magazine website, along with the Fotografe Grand Prix, an annual competition that had two editions, in 2021 and 2022. The winners of the 2021 Fotografe Grand Pri x were exhibited at the Panamericana Gallery, an initiative whose success fueled the desire to create a festival. Thus FotoDocwas born, an event organized by Vertente in partnership with Panamericana.

In its second editionin 2023, the festival introduced the FotoDoc Portfolio Award, which aims to give visibility to works and themes that are relevant to the present day. The winners of the award are part of a prominent exhibition in the festival’s program.

In its third editionwhich took place from November 26 to 30, 2024, the festival increased the number of winners of the FotoDoc Portfolio Award from 17 to 20, increasing the representation of emerging talents. The edition also marked the internationalization of the festival, with the presence of the Dutch Elspeth Diederix and Erik Vroons.
