Irina Ebralidze: The Labyrinths of Self-Portraiture

Who are we?

From Finland, where she currently lives, photographer Irina Ebralidze demonstrates that a passion for imagery can emerge at any moment in life and completely transform our relationship with the world. With only two and a half years of photographic trajectory, she has developed a singular visual language that explores the deepest layers of the human psyche, transforming photography into a tool for existential investigation.

Her image “Who are we?“, a finalist in the Single Image category of the FotoDoc Photo Contest 2025, is an intriguing self-portrait that transcends mere physical appearance to plunge into the universe of unanswered questions. Created in 2024, the work reflects her recurring practice of using her own body as an instrument of expression, creating visual narratives that function as mirrors of the inner world. More than capturing features, the photograph invites the viewer to an exercise of deep contemplation on the complexities of the human condition, establishing a silent dialogue between the artist and the observer.

Discover more about this journey of photographic discovery and Irina’s current projects in the interview that follows.

How old are you? Where do you currently live and work?

I am 63 years old and currently live in Helsinki, Finland.

Tell us about your journey in photography. When did you start photographing and why? What role does photography play in your life?

I became interested in photography two and a half years ago. At first, I simply wanted to take better pictures with my phone. Later, I bought a camera and completed several online courses on lighting, composition, and art photography. Photography has captivated me so deeply that it has become a very important part of my life.

Tell us about your finalist work for the FotoDoc Photo Contest 2025. When and where was it created? What is its concept? How does it fit into your photographic practice?

My finalist work was created in 2024. It is a self-portrait, as I often photograph myself to bring my ideas to life. The concept behind this work is an exploration of the human inner world — the thoughts and questions that frequently remain unanswered.

I strive to create images that do more than capture external appearances; they reflect inner emotions and states of being, inviting the viewer to engage in deeper contemplation.

What projects are you currently working on? What are your near-future plans for photographic production?

I am currently working on two projects. The first one uses archival photographs to create new stories. The second project is about rupture — it explores broken connections and lost relationships. My plan for the near future is to finish these projects and share them with the world, as these themes are deeply important to me.

I plan to develop as a photographer.
