Saulo Augusto Jr: Urban windows and the poetry of collective everyday life

Infinite Mirror

Espelho infinito,

At 41 years old, a father of three, and a territorial development strategist at the startup Polvo Lab, Saulo Augusto Jr. creates a photography born from the intersection of his professional commitments and his passion for the documentary. With a background that includes directing documentaries in the sertão (Brazilian backlands), he began to take photography seriously only at the end of last year, turning his constant travels to communities in the interior of the country into a “laboratory for his photographic gaze.” His visual practice emerges naturally from his work with the creative economy and social transformation, using the camera as an extension of his mission to connect territories and tell stories.

His image “Infinite Mirror“, a finalist in the Single Image category of the FotoDoc Photo Contest 2025, is part of the series “Life in the Collective” – poetic records made during his subway commutes to work. The photograph captures a moment of rare urban introspection: a man in a purple suit looking at the sky through the train window, creating an intriguing play of reflections and interiors. More than an everyday scene, the image raises questions about the search for transcendence in a grey city, inviting the viewer to imagine “what he is seeing or thinking.” The work perfectly synthesizes Augusto Jr.’s approach: using the documentary as a way to connect personal stories with urban landscapes, finding poetry in the metropolis’s spaces of transition and displacement.

Learn more about this photographic discovery and the projects that unite beekeeping, cocoa, and quebradeiras de coco babaçu (babassu coconut breakers) in the following interview.

How old are you? Where do you currently live and work?

I am 41 years old, I am a father of three, and I currently work at Polvo Lab, a creative economy startup. There, I am responsible for the overall strategy of territorial development and for the social transformation of productive communities that access markets through our initiatives.

Tell us about your journey in photography. When did you start photographing and why? What role does photography play in your life?

I have always been passionate about images, and since I have always worked while traveling, I felt the desire to record everything in photographs. My passion has always been for the documentary—I even directed documentaries in the Sertão—but I started to take photography seriously as an activity at the end of last year. In my work, I have access to many communities in the interior of the country, and I started using them as a true laboratory for my photographic gaze.

Tell us about your finalist work for the FotoDoc Photo Contest 2025. When and where was it created? What is its concept? How does it fit into your photographic practice?

I take the subway to work, and on this route, I often record scenes that catch my attention. I call this series “Life in the Collective”. One day, I came across a man in a purple suit, looking at the sky through the window. That intrigued me… I took the photo thinking: “I wonder what he is seeing or thinking? Is he searching for the sky in this so-grey city?”. This image ended up becoming part of the work that was a finalist for the award.

What projects are you currently working on? What are your near-future plans for photographic production?

I am currently developing three main projects:
● A photobook about beekeeping in the interior of Piauí;
● A project about cocoa in the south of Bahia;
● A project in the interior of Maranhão with quebradeiras de coco babaçu (babassu coconut breakers).

In the near future, I want to deepen these series, always exploring the documentary as a way to tell stories and connect territories.
