At 50 years old, photographer Al\u00ea Bruny<\/strong> <\/a>from Rio Grande do Sul has transformed her gaze into an instrument for the ethical and affective documentation of humanitarian crises. Based in Porto Alegre and active throughout Rio Grande do Sul, she dedicates her work to the territories and communities affected by the climate crisis that has plagued the state since 2023, developing a photographic approach that prioritizes sensitive listening and the preservation of the dignity of her subjects.<\/h4>\n

Her essay “Among Reflections: The Secrets We Conceal<\/strong><\/a>” a finalist in the Photo Essay<\/strong>\u00a0category of the\u00a0FotoDoc Photo Contest 2025<\/strong><\/a>, is a poetic and urgent testimony to the greatest environmental tragedy in Brazil’s history. Carried out in Eldorado do Sul (RS) in June 2025, during the recurrence of floods that marked one year since the extreme events of May 2024, the work transcends documentary record to explore water as a metaphorical mirror\u2014revealing both what it takes and returns, and what it keeps and tries to hide. The series captures the “disasters within the disaster,” focusing on individual dramas, immeasurable losses, and especially, the gestures of humanity that persist even amidst chaos, reflecting the photographer’s commitment to building visual narratives that honor the complexity of human experiences in crisis situations.<\/h4>\n

How old are you? Where do you currently live and work?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I am 50 years old. I currently live in Porto Alegre and work throughout Rio Grande do Sul, especially in the territories impacted by the climate and humanitarian crisis the state has been facing with greater intensity and frequency since 2023.<\/p>\n

Tell us about your journey in photography. When did you start photographing and why? What role does photography play in your life?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I started photographing when my twin daughters were born. At first, it was just a hobby, a desire to preserve their early childhood. I took my first basic course, and before I knew it, there was no longer room for another profession in my life. Photography became a part of me, my language, and my craft\u2014a way of seeing the world and seeing myself, talking about what I see, but also about who I am.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Tell us about your finalist work for the FotoDoc Photo Contest 2025. When and where was it created? What is its concept? How does it fit into your photographic practice?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

My finalist essay, \u201cAmong Reflections: The Secrets We Conceal,\u201d was created in the city of Eldorado do Sul, RS, in June 2025, amidst the recurrence of a flood one year after the extreme events of May 2024, which culminated in the greatest environmental tragedy in the history of the State and of Brazil.<\/p>\n

The series was born from the urgency to document not only the disaster but the infinite \u201cdisasters within the disaster\u201d\u2014the individual dramas, the immeasurable losses, and, above all, the gestures of humanity that endure even amidst chaos.<\/p>\n

The concept is to look at water as a mirror, recording what it takes, what it returns, what it keeps, and also what it tries to hide.<\/p>\n

It is also a central part of my photographic production, which is dedicated to building ethical and affective visual narratives about humanitarian crises, always preserving the dignity and time of those who allow me to listen.<\/p>\n

What projects are you currently working on? What are your near-future plans for photographic production?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I continue to document the stories of people affected by the climate crisis in RS, many of whom I have been following since the flood of September 2023, others from the rescues and shelters of May 2024, and even those currently living in the reconstruction phase. In parallel, I develop cultural projects focused on memory, education, and art as tools of resistance in contexts of crisis.<\/p>\n

My plans for the near future include publishing a book bringing together the narratives I have been recording, creating a documentary that unites image and testimony, and continuing to participate in exhibitions and public grants that give visibility to these stories. I want my work to continue fulfilling the role I believe is essential: to document in order to transform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
