A Ilha da Mar\u00e9 \u00e9 uma pequena ilha localizada na Bahia de Todos os Santos no estado da Bahia, localizada na regi\u00e3o nordeste do Brasil. As comunidades que vivem na ilha s\u00e3o principalmente comunidades quilombolas que vivem da pesca e da mariscagem. Os Quilombos s\u00e3o assentamentos fundados entre 1500 e in\u00edcio de 1900 por pessoas de origem africana; a maioria dos membros dessas comunidades s\u00e3o descendentes de escravos fugitivos que formaram assentamentos quilombolas.<\/p>\n

Em 1940, foram descobertas jazidas de petr\u00f3leo na Bahia de Todos os Santos, ba\u00eda onde se localiza a cidade de Salvador; po\u00e7os de extra\u00e7\u00e3o de petr\u00f3leo foram instalados no mar da Bahia de Todos os Santos, na zona de Candeia e na Ilha de Mar\u00e9, a maioria deles ainda funciona ou esteve ativa at\u00e9 o in\u00edcio dos anos 2000. Em 1950, localizada em frente ao Ilha de Mar\u00e9, foi inaugurada a refinaria Ludulpho Alves-Mataripe. Em 1953 foi fundada a empresa nacional de petr\u00f3leo, a Petrobras e em 1967 foi constru\u00eddo o Complexo Industrial de Aratu, um porto comercial para exporta\u00e7\u00e3o de g\u00e1s e produtos petroqu\u00edmicos. Em 2021 a Mudabala Capital dos Emirados \u00c1rabes Unidos comprou a refinaria de Mataripe.<\/p>\n

O P\u00f3lo Petroqu\u00edmico de Cama\u00e7ari e o Porto de Aratu-Candeias s\u00e3o respons\u00e1veis por 60% dos cargueiros que viajam de e para o Estado da Bahia, mas tamb\u00e9m, com a refinaria e os po\u00e7os de petr\u00f3leo, s\u00e3o respons\u00e1veis pelo n\u00edvel de polui\u00e7\u00e3o ambiental e incidentes relacionados.<\/p>\n

Em seus estudos, a pesquisadora Neuza Miranda tem mostrado a alta contamina\u00e7\u00e3o de C\u00e1dmio e Chumbo provenientes das ind\u00fastrias locais nas crian\u00e7as da Ilha de Mar\u00e9.<\/p>\n

O Racismo Ambiental foi teorizado entre os anos 1970 e 1980, sua defini\u00e7\u00e3o tem sido usada para descrever as injusti\u00e7as ambientais em uma disputa racial. O racismo ambiental ocorre quando decis\u00f5es pol\u00edticas relacionadas ao meio ambiente s\u00e3o tomadas e, como consequ\u00eancia, geram discrimina\u00e7\u00e3o racial ou impactam negativamente um determinado grupo \u00e9tnico\/racial espec\u00edfico de pessoas.<\/p>\n

A investigadora Beatriz Moreira Bispo sublinha a falta de comunica\u00e7\u00e3o e compromisso entre as institui\u00e7\u00f5es, a empresa e as Comunidades locais. Esta falta de comunica\u00e7\u00e3o, media\u00e7\u00e3o e redu\u00e7\u00e3o do impacto ambiental geram conflitos locais.<\/p>\n

Apesar da comunidade da Ilha de Mar\u00e9 tentar estabelecer um di\u00e1logo com as Institui\u00e7\u00f5es e as Empresas para melhorar a situa\u00e7\u00e3o ambiental, muito pouco tem sido feito para diminuir o n\u00edvel de polui\u00e7\u00e3o ou os fatores que afetam a Comunidade da Ilha de Mare fazendo com que sofram de racismo ambiental.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Story on Oil, Pollution and Racism\u201d documenta a vida das Comunidades da Ilha da Mar\u00e9 pesquisando as causas e as consequ\u00eancias da polui\u00e7\u00e3o e fatos hist\u00f3ricos que geram um concurso de racismo ambiental.<\/p>\n
