My name is Jakub Nowaczyk. My father, Leszek Nowaczyk, died of liver failure (a consequence of alcohol abuse). I lost him when I was sixteen. I remember the day he died as one of the most beautiful days of my life. Over time, I began to get used to his absence. At \ufb01rst, I felt relief\u2014no more arguments, shouting, or violence at home. As the years passed, I forgot about him more and more, as if I were erasing his existence. And yet, the feeling of emptiness never left me.<\/h4>\n

In early 2023, while searching the attic of our family home, I came across my father’s journal titled Dark Thoughts. I also found hundreds of photographs and letters. As I went through them, I realized I had never truly known him. He had once been a sensitive man, a poet, an excellent photographer, a caring husband, and most of all\u2014a loving father. Though I missed his love, I now know he never stopped loving us.<\/p>\n

The death of my grandfather (who passed away on my father\u2019s sixth birthday), being raised by a despotic, communist grandfather, and the absence of a mother\u2019s care left wounds in him\u2014wounds that, in some way, were passed on to me.<\/p>\n

Even though he caused me a lot of pain, I am proud of him, and I hope he would be proud of me too.<\/p>\n

The Dark Thoughts project is my attempt to come to terms with my father\u2019s image, but also to \ufb01nd myself. I\u2019ve always felt like I was chasing something, even though I never knew what. This project is my answer to that search.<\/p>\n

Originally, it began as my master\u2019s thesis at the Commission of National Education Universi-ty in Krak\u00f3w. It was accompanied by a photo book of the same title. But I feel that not eve-rything has yet been uncovered, and my relationship with my father is still evolving. That\u2019s why I continue to develop the project\u2014and as it changes, so do I.<\/p>\n

In my work, I strive to process reality through the lens of personal experience. Aesthetics take a back seat to emotion. I see the world through the eyes of someone who inwardly endures pain, turmoil, and anxiety\u2014often in solitude. My photographs tell the stories of those who suffer quietly, without seeking understanding among the trendy social masks and facades so common today. These are stories about a world that is lonely and strange. About injustice and the social chains that bind us. About Poland\u2014as a cage that\u2019s hard to escape. In this reality, darkness often becomes a refuge. That\u2019s why I primarily work in black and white photography\u2014it allows me to focus on emotion rather than the formal aspects of the image. I mainly work with analog techniques, using a unique, self-developed process for developing film.
